Super Eagles Captain William Troost-Ekong Retires From International Football

Super Eagles Captain and one part of the famed ‘Oyibo wall’, William Troost Ekong has retired from international football just a little over two weeks before AFCON 2025.

Born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mother and Nigerian father, Troost-Ekong chose Nigeria after youth caps with the Netherlands and made his senior debut in 2015.

He went on to represent the nation at the Rio 2016 Olympics (winning bronze), the 2018 World Cup, and multiple AFCON tournaments, leading Nigeria at AFCON 2021 and winning Player of the Tournament at AFCON 2023, where he set the record for most goals by a defender.

He retires with 83 caps, 8 goals, and national honours including Member of the Order of the Niger.
