Shehu Sani Advocates Election Winners Should Swear By the Bible or Quran That they Truly Won Elections

Former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has canvassed for the abolition of an oath of office in favour of divine texts.

The lawmaker is weighing in on the ongoing discussions surrounding the conduct of elections in the country.

The recent case was the Edo gubernatorial election, which has precipitated a flurry of reactions focusing on the alleged role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking via his X handle on Wednesday, Sani insisted on the use of divine texts when swearing in election victors.

“The Oath of office should be abolished. It should be replaced by the Winners swearing by the Qur’an or the Bible that they have truly won fairly”, the ex-lawmaker wrote.

In a similar development, Governor Ahmad Fintiri of Adamawa State accused the electoral body as well as the government of stripping people of their democratic rights to choose their leaders.

The governor is at the forefront of those slamming INEC for alleged connivance and manipulation in Edo polls, noting that poor electoral process produces bad leaders.

“So long as you don’t allow the people to choose their leaders, you can’t get leaders who are accountable to the people”, Fintiri wrote on X ok Wednesday.

Sani and Fintiri’s comments are suggestive of the deep flaws that characterize Nigeria’s electoral practice.

Aside from consistent calls for the review of electoral guidelines, several experts have moved for a complete constitution that will guarantee the people the opportunity of being governed on their own terms.
