Rivers Assembly Speaker, 16 Lawmakers Defect to APC Citing Deep Division in PDP

The political landscape in Rivers State shifted sharply on Thursday as the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Amaewhule disclosed that 16 lawmakers joined him in the move, describing their decision as a response to what he called a “clear division” within the PDP.

The announcement was made during a plenary session at the Assembly Complex, where members were seen in large numbers as the development unfolded.

The escalating internal crisis in the PDP left lawmakers with no choice but to seek a platform they believe offers stability and direction.

The defection marks one of the most significant political realignments in the state in recent months.
