Today marks the first anniversary of the untimely death of Mohbad, a talented and influential figure in the Nigerian music industry.

Mohbad, born Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, left an unforgettable mark on the hearts of fans and the music scene with his unique sound and captivating artistry.

Fans have resumed calls for justice. A peaceful demonstration took place outside the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ikorodu yesterday, led by actor Yomi Fabiyi.

Mohbad, who passed away under suspicious circumstances, was exhumed for a postmortem after widespread outrage.

Police reported in 2023 that the singer had received injections from a quack nurse, that included tetanus toxoid, paracetamol, and an antibiotic called Cetrazone. Soon after receiving the injections, the singer had convulsions, nausea, and goosebumps before passing away.

His fans and family remain frustrated by delays in the autopsy results and suspicious circumstances.

Prof. Shokunle Shoyemi, a pathologist, stated in May 2024 that the singer’s cause of death was “uncertain.” By the time an autopsy was conducted, the singer’s body had become too decomposed to determine the cause of death, according to Shokunle.

Mohbad’s legacy

Mohbad’s rise to fame was nothing short of extraordinary. His music, characterized by a blend of Afrobeat, Afro-pop, and street vibes, resonated with a diverse audience.

The one-year mark of his passing serves as a reminder of his legacy. Tributes have poured in from all corners of the music world, celebrating his life and contributions.

Social media platforms are abuzz with messages from fans, sharing their favourite songs and memories of Mohbad. His family and close friends have also organized memorials and tributes to honour his memory and the impact he made during his short but impactful career.

“I still don’t know how I’ve survived without you. God, I wish you were here every single day-every millisecond of the day. Your passing brought me unbearable pain, but it has also shaped me. I’ve learned so much, and I’m still learning. I’ll never be okay with you not being here; it messes with my head. I keep thinking it’s a nightmare I’ll wake up from, but 366 days have passed, and I  haven’t,” his widowed wife, Wunmi, stated on her Instagram account.

Industry comedian, cute Abiola also shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, posting a video of Mohbad testifying in a white garment church. “The Lord has been so good to me; He made me the light that refuses to dim,” the late singer said in the video as an expression of his gratitude to God.

As we reflect on Mohbad’s life and career, we also recognize the challenges and systemic issues in the industry. His passing has sparked conversations about mental health and the support systems available for artists.
