PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc has announced the appointment of Dr. Anthony Ikemefuna Idigbe, SAN, as an Independent Non-Executive Director, effective March 27, 2025. The appointment is subject to ratification at the company’s next Annual General Meeting.
Dr. Idigbe joins the board with an exceptional four-decade-long legal career marked by expertise in corporate governance, business restructuring, capital markets, energy law, and insolvency. He is the Senior Partner at PUNUKA Attorneys & Solicitors, one of Nigeria’s most respected commercial law firms, where he has led numerous high-profile transactions and reforms.
Called to the Nigerian Bar in 1983 and to the Ontario Bar in 2016, Dr. Idigbe was elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2000. His educational background spans some of the world’s leading institutions: LL.B from the University of Ife; LL.M degrees from the University of Lagos and Robert Gordon University, Scotland; and a doctorate in cross-border insolvency from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, Toronto.
He also holds a GPLLM from the University of Toronto, an MBA from Enugu State University of Science and Technology, and executive certificates from Harvard Business School and Emeritus Business School, in partnership with MIT and Columbia.
Beyond academia and practice, Dr. Idigbe has been deeply engaged in reforming Nigeria’s legal and regulatory environment. He chaired the committee that reviewed the Investment and Securities Act and helped draft the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act. He has also served as a consultant to the Bureau of Public Enterprises and the Petroleum Revenue Special Task Force under President Goodluck Jonathan.
Dr. Idigbe currently chairs Ikeja Hotel Plc and The Tourist Company of Nigeria Plc and is a director at Royal Exchange Plc. He previously chaired Capital Hotel Plc and led the Statutory Audit Committee of Seplat Energy Plc for eight years. His leadership extends to chambers of commerce, serving as President of the Delta Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture and as Legal Adviser to the national umbrella body, NACCIMA.
Internationally, he is affiliated with the Canadian Association of Nigerian Lawyers, the London Court of International Arbitration, the International Insolvency Institute, and several arbitration and energy negotiation bodies. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Directors Nigeria, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), and INSOL International.
In a statement, PZ Cussons Nigeria expressed confidence in Dr. Idigbe’s ability to contribute “significantly to the ongoing strategic direction of the Company.”
His appointment underscores the company’s continued focus on deepening governance, strengthening board independence, and navigating regulatory and commercial complexities with seasoned expertise.
