President Tinubu Nominates Amb. Ismail Abba Yusuf as NAHCON Chairman

New NAHCON Chairman

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf as the new Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), subject to confirmation by the Senate. He is succeeding Professor Abdullahi Usman, who stepped down earlier this week .

The nomination, made in accordance with Section 3(2) of the NAHCON Act, 2006, was formally communicated to the Senate in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday.

Diplomatic Experience

Ambassador Yusuf is a seasoned Nigerian career diplomat with decades of experience in public service and international relations. He served as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Türkiye from 2021 to 2024. During his tenure, he played a key role in strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Türkiye. In particular, he focused on trade, security cooperation, and cultural exchange.

His background in diplomacy and administration is seen by observers as a strategic fit for NAHCON. NAHCON oversees the organization and coordination of Hajj and Umrah activities for Nigerian pilgrims.

NAHCON

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria is responsible for regulating and supervising Hajj operations in the country. This includes the licensing of tour operators, coordination with Saudi Arabian authorities, and ensuring the welfare of Nigerian pilgrims during pilgrimage exercises.

With preparations for the 2026 Hajj season expected to begin in earnest in the coming months, stakeholders say timely confirmation of a substantive chairman will be critical for policy direction. Furthermore, it will be crucial for financial planning and logistical coordination.

Senate Confirmation Process

The Senate is expected to screen the nominee in the coming days. If confirmed, Ambassador Yusuf will assume leadership of the commission at a time when reforms aimed at improving transparency, cost management, and service delivery remain high on the agenda.

The appointment underscores the administration’s ongoing efforts to reposition key institutions and ensure experienced leadership across strategic government agencies.
