The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and three other senior officials in what appears to be a fresh escalation of the party’s internal crisis.
The decision, announced on Saturday by the National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, followed a marathon meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
Others affected by the suspension are the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN); the National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature; and the Deputy National Legal Adviser.
Ologunagba said the suspension, which takes immediate effect, would last for one month pending the outcome of a disciplinary review.
“The National Working Committee, after careful deliberation, has resolved to suspend the affected officers for a period of one month and refer them to the Disciplinary Committee for further action,” Ologunagba stated, adding that the move was in line with the party’s constitution and aimed at restoring order and discipline within the PDP.
Party insiders disclosed that the suspended officials are perceived allies of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and have recently distanced themselves from party meetings, worsening internal divisions.
Internal Crisis
The development comes amid rising tension over the PDP’s planned national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Just a day earlier, a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the PDP to halt preparations for the convention, citing unresolved disputes over delegates and leadership.
Reacting to the ruling, Ologunagba said the party would appeal the judgment, maintaining that preparations for the convention remain on course.
“The PDP respects the judiciary, but we will challenge this ruling at the appellate court. Our preparations for the national convention remain on course,” he affirmed.
The suspension marks yet another turning point in the PDP’s ongoing power tussle, underscoring the widening rift between factions loyal to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and those aligned with Minister Nyesom Wike.
