We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Head of Agency to lead our Nigeria operations. The Head of the Country Agency will oversee leadership, profitability, operational efficiency, strategic planning, execution, and corporate governance for PIL’s existing agency activities in Nigeria. This role requires a proactive approach to drive growth and profitability, enhance cost and efficiency, and spearhead an ambitious agenda for agency rejuvenation and modernization.

Key Responsibilities:

Day-to-day Sales/CS /Operations activities:

  • Accountable for driving business performance regarding all commercial and operational activities as well as agency income.
  • Anticipate and provide proactive solutions to all matters arising (e.g., profit decline, adverse market factors, employee conflicts, etc.)
  • Responsible for effective and efficient working capital management, including cash and control of debtors
  • Effectively manage local cash flows and ensure financial stability of the Company

Business Development:

  • Lead, develop and grow PIL business in the country through formulation and execution of agreed business strategies
  • Deliver the agency scorecard (against agreed KPIs), budget and business plans, ensuring all commercial, operational and financial targets are met
  • Build and take ownership of approved budgets, optimize any financial exposure and assume full P&L responsibilities for all aspects of Agency and Principal operations

Process Innovation:

  • Formulate and execute strategies to grow PIL’s business, meeting KPIs, budgets, and business plans.
  • Proactively pursue an agenda of standardization and best practice, in order to align the agency processes to those set by the Region.

Team Management:

  • Ensure the team is optimized from a headcount perspective and that all opportunities for business/process improvements are made
  • Ensure employees work productively and to the standards required, coach direct reports for effective leadership, and develop them professionally, cultivating a diverse, sustainable, and capable talent pipeline

Compliance:

Ensure adherence to tax, regulatory, and labor requirements in alignment with PIL Group directives.

Embody the PIL core values, and ensure that these are promoted within the organization

MUST HAVE:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with a minimum of 10 years of commercial and leadership experience in the container/liner shipping industry.
  • Proven P&L management experience with a strong understanding of emerging markets.
  • Excellent knowledge of equipment management, port, and terminal operations.
  • Fluency in English with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical, strategic, and leadership skills with a self-motivated, open-minded approach.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple objectives and priorities simultaneously.
  • Ideally with experience or understanding of emerging markets. Experience within sub-Saharan Africa would be a big advantage.
  • Excellent understanding (domain knowledge) and management of liner shipping business and its value chain.
  • Ability to assume the role on short notice.
