Nordic Hotels to Open in Lagos in 2021

Nordic Hotels & Resorts is opening a new hotel in Nigeria this year after operating in the country’s capital for nearly a decade via the Nordic Villa and the Nordic Hotel Abuja. The new hotel will be located on Victoria Island in Lagos and headed by hospitality veteran Kevin Lawless, who was appointed general manager recently. 

The Abuja hotel is very modest, with a maximum of 16 rooms but distinguished by exquisite furnishing and high-quality stylish decor, advertised as Scandinavian style. “We have redefined the concept of a boutique hotel by combining distinctive modern Scandinavian design with exquisite service and comfort,” a statement on the company’s website reads. “Our utmost attention is placed on providing guests with a desirable environment away from home.”

The high-end boutique hotel is popular with international travellers and known to offer very high standards of service, offering unique rooms and suites in peaceful and pleasant surroundings for both business and leisure travellers. A night stay costs ₦59,933.50 in a standard single room, ₦65,720.00 for a standard double, and ₦78,560.00 for a deluxe room, as of the time of writing.

“It’s simply a home away from home… A beautiful and serene environment, pleasant staff, good service… Satisfaction guaranteed!” Adesola Mafe Odetundun wrote about Nordic Hotels in a Facebook review. To Trevor Maisiri, the hotel is a “real oasis in the midst of the bustle and hassle of Abuja.”

The “Scandanavian” design – marked by beautiful decor and wonderful ambiance – is what some find most appealing. “It’s small, minimalist, boutique, spotlessly clean (yes, really!), great music in the stylish reception, and even better coffee,” WoodTiger77 said in a review on Tripadvisor.

But the new Lagos hotel will be significantly bigger than the Abuja facilities. According to the company, the new Lagos hotel will feature 61 rooms and suites, a 60-seater restaurant and bar, a swimming pool and gym as well as meeting facilities to cater for up to 80 guests. This raises the question of whether it can maintain the magic mix of serenity, stylish furnishing, and spotless maintenance unique in the market.

The new hotel will be competing with a host of local brands that dominate the market in the commercial capital, believed to house the most share of hotels in Nigeria, while helping to solve the persistent unemployment issue as well as further develop tourism and hospitality in the country. The sector’s contribution – under travel and tourism – to gross domestic product stood at 5.2% in 2020, in a year it was hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

More so, Nordic Hotels’ proven winning formula should make the facility stand out. There has been huge investment in the hospitality sector over the years but often without experienced professional advisers. A number of local players get things wrong from the start – invest hundreds of millions in poorly designed buildings with a host of imperfect finishings and gaudy interiors.
