NNPC targets nationwide CNG access with 100 new stations, three LNG sites

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has announced its unwavering commitment to bringing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) closer to Nigerians.

Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, revealed that alongside the extensive deployment of CNG stations across the country, NNPC and its partners will also construct three Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) stations in Ajaokuta.

Kyari made this statement on Thursday during the simultaneous commissioning of 12 CNG stations in Abuja and Lagos by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo.

“There is simply no turning back on delivering CNG to all Nigerians. It is the right thing to do. Is it late? Yes, but we will make progress,” Kyari stated. “We will bridge the gap to ensure that the volatility we see with Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) does not affect gas.”

Kyari also commended President Bola Tinubu for his support in promoting domestic gas utilisation, which aims to deliver cleaner and cheaper energy sources to Nigerians.

Managing Director of NNPC Retail Limited, Huub Stokman, noted that NNPC Retail plans to establish over 100 CNG sites within the next year, including 16 sites in partnership with NNPC Gas Marketing and NIPCO Gas JV.

“CNG provides Nigeria with affordable alternatives to existing fuel products. It will be about 40 per cent cheaper than petrol in Nigeria, and with continued investments, it will become a significant part of our energy mix,” Stokman said.

Chairman of the NNPC Board of Directors, Pius Akinyelure, highlighted the economic benefits of increased CNG adoption, emphasising that it would reduce fuel costs for consumers and businesses alike.

NNPC Ltd. has spearheaded the deployment of Auto-CNG Stations across Nigeria following the removal of fuel subsidies and the initiation of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiatives. In collaboration with NIPCO Gas Limited, NNPC Gas Marketing Limited, a subsidiary of NNPC Ltd., has developed an Auto-CNG rollout plan that includes the construction of 35 CNG stations nationwide.
