NNPC, Heirs Energies Sign Gas Flare Agreements to Boost Power Generation

Tony Elumelu Confirms Heirs Holdings Staff Deaths in Afriland Towers Fire

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) and Heirs Energies have signed Gas Flare Commercialization Agreements aimed at expanding gas supply for power generation and industrial use in Nigeria.

The deal, which forms part of the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme (NGFCP) and approved non-NGFCP frameworks, marks a major move from regulatory approvals to commercial execution.

Signed at the Heirs Energies headquarters in Lagos, the agreement will capture flare gas from OML 17 and convert it for power production, industrial applications, as well as LPG and CNG output.

Speaking at the signing, NNPC’s representative and Chief Upstream Investment Officer, Engr. Seyi Omotowa, said the initiative is a strategic tool for energy security rather than just a regulatory requirement.

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) also reaffirmed its support for flare-reduction efforts and commended the participation of private offtakers including AUT Gas, Twems Energies, GPID, PCCD and AGTC.

Heirs Energies CEO, Osa Igiehon, said the agreements reinforce the company’s gas-led growth strategy, stressing that “gas sits at the heart of Nigeria’s development journey.”

OML 17 has already witnessed significant increases in gas output, including a rigless recompletion in 2025 that doubled joint venture gas production and improved supply to the national grid.
