Nigeria’s total merchandise trade stood at ₦38,037.52 billion in Q2 2025, reflecting a 20.05% increase from ₦31,683.75 billion in Q2 2024, and a 5.59% rise from ₦36,024.66 billion recorded in Q1 2025.
This steady growth underscores Nigeria’s strengthening position in global trade.
Imports accounted for 40.19% of total trade, valued at ₦15,286.78 billion. Compared to Q2 2024, imports rose by 9.43% from ₦13,969.34 billion, though they dipped slightly by 0.90% against Q1 2025’s ₦15,426.17 billion.
Despite this, Nigeria maintained a positive trade balance of ₦7,463.96 billion, an impressive 44.31% improvement over the preceding quarter.
Nigeria’s Import Partners
China remained Nigeria’s dominant import partner, supplying goods worth ₦4,960.82 billion, or 32.45% of total imports. The United States followed with ₦2,158.24 billion (14.12%), while India contributed ₦901.48 billion (5.90%).
Other significant partners included the Netherlands (₦606.82 billion, 3.97%), and the United Arab Emirates (₦536.09 billion, 3.51%).
Additional import sources were Belgium (₦497 billion), the United Kingdom (₦481 billion), Brazil (₦469 billion), Spain (₦358 billion), and Germany (₦270 billion).
Nigeria’s Export Partners
Exports represented the bulk of trade, accounting for 59.81% in Q2 2025. Spain emerged as Nigeria’s leading export destination, purchasing goods worth ₦2,467.33 billion (10.85%).
India followed with ₦1,982.25 billion (8.71%), alongside France (₦1,622.53 billion, 7.13%), the Netherlands (₦1,536.68 billion, 6.75%), and Canada (₦1,426.79 billion, 6.27%).
Other major buyers of Nigerian exports included the United States (₦1.36 trillion), China (₦1.11 trillion), Indonesia (₦840 billion), Togo (₦811 billion), and the United Arab Emirates (₦766 billion).
Trade with Africa
Intra-African trade remained significant. Nigeria’s exports to African countries totaled ₦2,966.83 billion, representing 13.04% of total exports. Notably, exports to ECOWAS nations made up ₦1,928.07 billion, or 64.99% of Nigeria’s exports to Africa.
On the import side, Nigeria sourced ₦821.41 billion worth of goods from African partners, equivalent to 5.37% of total imports. Imports from ECOWAS countries were valued at ₦390.84 billion, representing 47.58% of Nigeria’s imports from the continent.
