Judge Frank Caprio, fondly known worldwide as “the nicest judge in the world,” has died at the age of 88 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
His family confirmed that he passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025, with his son noting he took his last breath at 2:15 p.m.
Caprio, who rose to global fame through his Emmy-nominated television program Caught in Providence, captured hearts with his compassionate rulings and deep empathy for people who appeared before him in court.
For nearly four decades, he served as a municipal court judge in Providence, Rhode Island, where his blend of fairness and kindness made him a beloved figure both in the community and far beyond.
News of his passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes, with Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee ordering flags flown at half-staff and describing Caprio as a “treasure” who embodied empathy on the bench.
