NDDC Launches N50,000 Monthly Stipend for 10,000 Niger Delta Youths

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commenced the disbursement of a N50,000 monthly stipend to 10,000 indigenous youths from the Niger Delta region as part of its Youth Internship Scheme. This initiative was confirmed by Mrs. Seledi-Thompson-Wakama, the Director of Corporate Affairs at NDDC, during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

Program Overview

Under the scheme, the selected youths will receive practical, hands-on training in various organizations for a duration of 12 months. This training is aimed at equipping them with critical skills necessary for their career development. The program was inaugurated on July 31, 2024, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio announcing the Federal Government’s approval of the stipend.

Selection and Implementation

Thompson-Wakama detailed that the selection process for the beneficiaries has been completed, noting that these individuals are now being placed in organizations to gain practical experience.

“With the completion of these phases, the payment of the monthly stipends has also commenced,” she stated, emphasizing the transparency of the selection which saw over 3.2 million youths initially registering for the program.

Youth Engagement and Response

The director highlighted the overwhelming response to the scheme, indicating a significant desire among the youth for personal and professional development.

“This unprecedented response highlights the immense potential and aspirations of our youths to improve themselves,” she remarked, adding that the NDDC is committed to ensuring that this opportunity reaches those who can benefit the most, thereby fostering a positive impact on their futures.

Data Collection and Strategic Partnership

Furthermore, Thompson-Wakama explained that through this initiative, the NDDC has gathered vital data on the qualifications, skills, interests, needs, and employment status of the region’s youth.

This data collection was supported by a partnership with KPMG, a renowned global audit and consultancy firm. She noted that KPMG has provided a Governance Advisory Report to help transition the NDDC from a transaction-based approach to one focused on transformation.

In her closing remarks, Thompson-Wakama praised the patience and cooperation of the youths throughout the selection process, underlining the commission’s dedication to enhancing the corporate governance framework with the help of professional insights from KPMG.

This initiative not only aims at immediate skill enhancement but also lays the groundwork for long-term regional development.
