The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says key food staples such as beans, Garri, maize and tomatoes recorded notable price declines in September 2025, offering slight relief to Nigerian households battling high living costs.
The details were contained in the Selected Food Prices Watch Report released in Abuja on Tuesday.
Major Food Items That Became Cheaper
Beans (brown)
- Year-on-year: Prices fell by 33.7%, from ₦2,738.59 (Sept. 2024) to ₦1,815.76 (Sept. 2025).
- Month-on-month: Down 1.74% from ₦1,847.82 (Aug. 2025)
Garri (white)
- Year-on-year: Dropped 25.51%, from ₦1,170.25 to ₦871.78.
- Month-on-month: Down 6.52% from ₦932.53.
Maize (white grain, loose)
- Year-on-year: Declined 16.57%, from ₦1,065.14 to ₦888.68.
- Month-on-month: Down 6.56% from ₦951.04.
Tomatoes
- Year-on-year: Fell 10.56%, from ₦1,430.87 to ₦1,279.84.
- Month-on-month: Slight decline of 0.45%.
Items That Became More Expensive
Local Rice
- Year-on-year: Increased 1.99%, rising to ₦1,952.94.
- Month-on-month: Slight drop of 0.56% from August.
Boneless Beef
- Year-on-year: Rose sharply by 21.79%, from ₦5,633.60 to ₦6,861.25.
- Month-on-month: Nearly unchanged (-0.02%).
