Nationwide Blackout as National Grid Collapse

National Grid

Nigeria’s national grid collapsed on Wednesday. Data from the Independent System Operator (ISO) revealed that power generation plummeted from 2,917.83 megawatts (MW) to just 1.5 MW between 11 am and 12 pm.

Confirming the incident, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) announced on Twitter that the blackout began at 11:23 am. “Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid,” the company stated, assuring customers that efforts were underway to restore stability.

This incident follows earlier disputes in 2025 over the national grid’s reliability.

On February 12, parts of the country lost power after a reported collapse, though the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) denied claims that the grid failed twice this year.

In January, the TCN also rejected reports of another system collapse, while the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) later confirmed no grid failures in the first quarter of 2025.

However, NERC emphasized that it continues to push the System Operator to strengthen coordination and reduce vulnerabilities.

Nigeria’s national grid has long been fragile, suffering 11 collapses in 2024 alone.

This latest outage underscores the persistent challenge of ensuring a reliable electricity supply across Africa’s largest economy.
