NAHCON, State Boards Set May 9 for First 2025 Hajj Flight

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has announced that the inaugural flight for the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage will depart on May 9, 2025, marking a significant milestone in preparations for this year’s spiritual journey to Saudi Arabia.

This date was finalized during a high-level meeting held on Monday, April 22, between NAHCON and Chief Executives of State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards. According to the Commission, the meeting—chaired by NAHCON Chairman Jalal Ahmad Arabi—also reviewed logistics for airlift operations, accommodation, feeding, and medical support for Nigerian pilgrims in the holy land.

The confirmation of a May 9 kick-off underscores Nigeria’s commitment to early preparations—a strategic shift following past challenges related to late visa processing and logistical delays. In 2023, NAHCON faced criticism over coordination issues, prompting calls for stronger institutional reforms.

Under the current 2025 Hajj framework, the Commission is placing greater emphasis on digital registration, prompt remittance of Hajj fares by intending pilgrims, and seamless coordination with Saudi authorities. NAHCON had earlier announced that March 31, 2025, was the final deadline for the payment of Hajj fares, and has urged pilgrims to ensure all requirements are met ahead of the inaugural flight.

Approximately 95,000 Nigerian pilgrims are expected to perform Hajj this year, including both private tour operator clients and those registered through state boards. With recent improvements in bilateral agreements between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, including better allocation of tents in Mina and closer coordination on health protocols, NAHCON says it expects a smoother operation this year.

The Commission has also taken steps to enhance transparency in contract awards for services in Makkah and Madinah and introduced a monitoring team to oversee compliance by licensed service providers.

With the May 9 launch date now confirmed, attention turns to final inspections of aircraft and facilities by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other relevant agencies. NAHCON has assured the public of its readiness, stating that all participating airlines and service providers must meet international safety and quality standards.

This year’s Hajj takes place against a backdrop of rising costs and forex pressures in Nigeria. The average Hajj fare was fixed at over ₦4.8 million due to the depreciation of the naira, prompting concerns about accessibility for lower-income pilgrims. However, NAHCON insists the fare reflects real costs and subsidies from the Saudi authorities.

As the countdown begins, Nigerian authorities are aiming to demonstrate that lessons from past pilgrimages have been learned—ushering in what could be one of the most efficiently managed Hajj operations in recent years.
