Match Report

Manchester United had a first half to forget as Tottenham Hotspurs dominated play from the get-go. Spurs made early in-road into the game when Van de Van burst through the gap in United’s defence before crossing it for an easy tap-in goal for Johnson. It was a great start as Spurs scored three minutes into the match and kept putting pressure on Manchester United with some aggressive play. It was only thanks to Andre Onana’s heroics with some great saves that kept United from going further behind in the first half.

United’s attempts to come back into the game received a crushing blow before halftime when Bruno Fernandes got a direct Red Card as he caught Maddison high on the shin. It was a harsh call as replays showed Fernandes slipping as he went into the challenge. Thus, the day went from bad to worse for Manchester United.

Things looked bad for Eric Ten Hag’s team who substituted Mason Mount to play in Fernandes’s mid-field role. Alas, Spurs repeated their early scoring form at the start of the second half as Kulusevski found the back of the net.  Martinez got caught out in the midfield, allowing Johnson free rein to power down the right wing. His cross ricocheted off De Ligt and reached the waiting Kulusevski. Who flicked out a deft foot to send the ball over the top of Onana and into the far corner.

Manchester United looked to fight back with some aggressive play post Tottenham’s second goal. They pushed forward and tried to make something happen. Unfortunately, they couldn’t convert the opportunities created and Solanke put a stop to any Manchester United comeback hopes when he scored Spurs third goal of the game. It was a goal from a set piece. Bergvall delivered a great ball from the corner, Sarr was up with the header which fell in front of Solanke who guided the ball home. Manchester United had just started showing momentum, and Tottenham immediately put a stop to it.

Worst start to a Premier League Season for Manchester United

Ange Postecoglou’s side played one of their best games of the new season. They were the better side today. Manchester United and especially Eric Ten Hag will face a lot of questions. United have now won just two out of six games played. It’s the worst start of the season made by Manchester United in the Premier League era.
