  • Gordon earned Newcastle a penalty to equalise.
  • Gvardiol scores for Manchester City in the first half.
  • Haaland had an injury scare after suffering an ankle cut before the halftime.

Manchester City had a scruffy start at St. James Park for their encounter with Newcastle United. The home team played with a lot of intensity to try earn a premier league victory at their home ground against Man City for the first time since 2019. Alas, it ended as a well-deserved tie. Newcastle allowed City possession for most of the game while they focused on defending and high pressing. Also, While not shying away from threatening City with a counter when the opportunity presented itself.

It was Manchester City who got the breakthrough though, when Jack Grealish beat Trippier before sliding to Gvardiol who escaped Burn to score by finding the bottom corner. Newcastle would be disappointed for conceding the goal. The first half of the match finished with City leading by one goal to nil for Newcastle.

Early into the second half Newcastle hit back! Gordon was too quick as he got on the wrong side of Akanji. As Walker played him on from right-back. But there was contact from Ederson and he earned his team a penalty. Gordon converted the penalty with great composure in the absence of Isak. He calmly took it and found the bottom corner!

Guardiola was left fuming in the dugout as the contact between Ederson and Gordon was too light. The controversial penalty would certainly have divided opinions. The scoreline became 1-1, and the rest of the second half saw Newcastle being diligent with their defending while Manchester City kept pushing to score. Haaland wouldn’t be happy with his rare goalless performance today given his recent form.

On the other side, it ended up being a good afternoon for Eddie Howe and his team. Who earned themselves a well-deserved draw. Manchester City didn’t have their best game today but credit to Newcastle for coming up with a good gameplan. Having dropped points again with this draw for City after their last weekend draw with Arsenal. Arsenal and Liverpool will look to capitalise by winning their upcoming matches later today.
