The Lagos State Government is reigniting its Cash for Trash initiative, offering residents financial rewards in exchange for recyclable waste.
The programme, run by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), is designed to reduce waste pollution, promote recycling culture, and mitigate the effects of climate change in Nigeria’s largest city.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the renewed drive on Monday via his X handle, emphasizing that residents can now earn money every Thursday by submitting sorted recyclables.
“Did you know your trash can turn into cash? Our #Lawma_gov Recycling Team is on the ground in Lagos Island, showing communities how to make it happen!” Wahab stated.
In an accompanying video, officials from the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) were seen weighing bags of plastics and disbursing cash rewards to participants.
The initiative aims to demonstrate how communities can transform recyclable waste into income while contributing to a cleaner, greener city.
Wahab described the programme as “a win for your wallet and a win for our city,” highlighting its dual benefit of promoting environmental sustainability and economic empowerment.
The Cash for Trash model aligns with Lagos’ broader “waste-to-wealth” strategy and positions the city as a leader in circular economy practices in Africa.
