The Lagos State Government has announced a comprehensive traffic diversion plan to manage vehicle movement during emergency repairs on the Oworonshoki/Third Axial Bridge.
The 110-day rehabilitation project, which will take place in eight phases, begins on Tuesday, May 6, and ends Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
The repairs will be carried out in two major segments: Phases 1–4 (inbound Third Mainland Bridge) from May 6 to July 14, and Phases 5–8 (outbound) from July 15 to September 23. The project focuses on the expansion joints of the aging infrastructure.
To mitigate the disruption, the Ministry of Transportation has mapped out several alternative routes for motorists, particularly those commuting between Lagos Island and the mainland.
During the inbound repairs (Phases 1–4), motorists from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway heading to Victoria Island are advised to use the Ojota Slip Road into Ikorodu Road, connect to Anthony and proceed to Oshodi. Another option is to link Anthony through Town Planning Way and head toward Gbagada, using the Third Mainland Bridge to reach the Island.
Commuters from Ikeja are advised to connect through Maryland and Ikorodu Road, linking Funsho Williams Avenue to Eko Bridge. Those heading to Oshodi from Ikeja can turn at the Anthony ramp via the Taxi Park.
During the outbound phases (Phases 5–8), motorists leaving Victoria Island for Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and areas like Mowe should travel through Eko Bridge to Funsho Williams Avenue, connecting Ikorodu Road and accessing the expressway via the Abiola Gardens Ramp. Commuters heading to Alapere, Ketu, and Ikorodu should follow the same route through Ojota.
According to the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officers will be deployed to manage traffic and ease commuter movement throughout the repair period.
“This partial bridge closure is necessary to carry out critical maintenance work, and we urge motorists to be patient and cooperate with traffic officials,” Osiyemi stated in the press release.
The repairs are being overseen by the Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure’s Office of Infrastructure.
