Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), an Arab state with strict Islamic laws, last week announced that it would relax its laws to allow the consumption of alcohol in order to “boost the country’s economic and social standing and consolidate the UAE’s principles of tolerance”. The UAE has a per capita income of $43,004.95 (2018) while Kano per capita income is only about $1,350.

The Kano State Hisbah Board has destroyed 1,975,000 bottles of beer worth over N200 million with the state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje explaining that the consumption of alcohol and all other intoxicants can distort the mental capability of a person and is forbidden in Islam.

Crates and bottles of the alcoholic beverage, confiscated within Kano metropolis, were destroyed at Kalebawa in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area by the Hisbah police on the orders of the Governor.

Ganduje, who spoke at the event through his Deputy, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, said, “We have banned the consumption of beer in all parts of the State”, stressing that the Hisbah Board was established with the aim of preventing evil social acts in the society.
