In the build-up to the 2016 United States presidential election, James David Vance was a vocal critic of Donald Trump.
He labelled the Republican candidate as “idiotic” and “reprehensible,” and even likened him to Adolf Hitler in private conversations.
Fast forward to Monday, and Vance has been selected as Trump’s running mate, now standing as one of the former president’s staunchest allies, a transformation that has raised eyebrows across the political spectrum.
James David Vance’s journey from a “never Trumper” to a key figure in Trump’s inner circle is a remarkable one.
His shift has prompted both Democrats and some Republicans to question his motives, speculating whether Vance’s change of heart is driven by opportunism rather than genuine ideological alignment.

Despite these doubts, Trump and his advisors believe Vance’s conversion is authentic, pointing to his political views, which align closely with Trump’s blend of isolationism and economic populism, according to Reuters.
Vance’s views, particularly his opposition to U.S. aid for Ukraine, resonate with Trump’s conservative base. This stance, however, has caused friction with some Senate colleagues.
Tucker Carlson, a conservative commentator and Vance supporter, noted that Vance understands Trump’s platform and agrees with it, unlike many Republicans in Washington.
Vance, 39, hails from a poor background in southern Ohio, a narrative that could bolster Trump’s appeal in the Rust Belt, crucial for the upcoming election.
His personal story, from serving in the Marine Corps to graduating from Yale Law School and becoming a bestselling author with “Hillbilly Elegy,” adds to his appeal as a symbol of the American dream.
In his memoir and initial public statements, Vance was highly critical of Trump, questioning his leadership and comparing him to infamous historical figures.
However, by 2022, Vance had shifted his stance significantly, showing enough loyalty to earn Trump’s endorsement in a competitive Senate primary. This loyalty extended to downplaying the severity of the January 6 Capitol riot, a stance that helped him secure Trump’s favour.
Vance’s change of heart, he claims, wasn’t sudden but a gradual realisation that his initial opposition was more about Trump’s style than his policies. Over time, he recognised that he agreed with Trump on key issues like trade and foreign policy.
His relationship with Trump’s inner circle, particularly Donald Trump Jr., blossomed during the Ohio Senate primary.
Vance’s early endorsement of Trump in January 2023 was seen as a significant gesture of loyalty. Their joint visit to East Palestine, Ohio, following a toxic train derailment, further solidified their partnership, contrasting with President Joe Biden’s delayed visit.
Vance has also played a crucial role in fundraising for Trump’s campaign, leveraging his connections in the venture capitalist community to bring in significant contributions. His efforts have been appreciated by high-profile Trump allies like Tucker Carlson and Steve Bannon, enhancing his standing within the conservative movement.
While some view Vance’s transformation as opportunistic, others see him as a voice for a new Republican Party focused on the working class.
His critics argue that he merely echoes Trump’s views without offering anything new. Nonetheless, supporters believe Vance’s personal story and his ability to articulate the struggles of American families make him a valuable addition to the Trump ticket.
Senator John Barrasso, Vance’s mentor, summed it up by saying, “He saw the successes that President Trump brought to the country.”
Whether Vance’s shift is seen as genuine or self-serving, his rise from a Trump critic to running mate marks one of the most intriguing political transformations in recent history.
