Giorgio Armani was synonymous with modern Italian style and elegance, combining the flair of the designer with the acumen of a businessman, running a company that turned over some 2.3 billion euros ($2.7 billion) a year.

He began his career in the 1960s as a window dresser and menswear designer before founding his own label, Armani, in 1975 with his lifelong business partner, Sergio Galeotti.

Armani revolutionised menswear by introducing softer lines, unstructured jackets, and neutral palettes, offering a relaxed alternative to traditional suits. His designs quickly expanded into womenswear, projecting sophistication and understated glamour.

Known as “Re Giorgio” – King Giorgio – the designer was known for overseeing every detail of his collection and every aspect of his business, from advertising to fixing models’ hair as they head out on to the runway.
