The Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2024 commenced on Wednesday, with artificial intelligence (AI) at the forefront, showcasing its disruptive potential across various industries.

The event saw leading Chinese companies presenting their latest AI-driven innovations, from advanced smartphones to autonomous intelligent vehicles, according to AFP.

Honor’s Deepfake Scam Detection Technology

One of the highlights was Honor’s unveiling of technology designed to detect deepfake scam calls and provide real-time warnings to users.

Deepfake AI scams, where fraudsters manipulate images, audio, or video to impersonate individuals, are becoming a significant threat as generative AI becomes more prevalent. A recent incident in Hong Kong saw a finance worker lose $26 million to fraudsters posing as colleagues on a video call.

Honor demonstrated this technology with a video where a man used an AI filter to alter his appearance during a video call. The victim’s phone displayed a pop-up message, warning of a potential face swap.

The software, set to be available on Honor devices this year, uses AI to analyse elements such as eye contact and lighting frame by frame, identifying imperceptible flaws within three seconds.

Honor’s CEO, George Zhao, emphasised the empowering potential of on-device AI, addressing concerns about AI’s impact on authenticity.

The Unstoppable AI Revolution

Despite inherent risks, high-profile speakers at the conference underscored the unstoppable nature of the AI revolution.

“AI needs to be omnipotent; it needs to be everywhere,” stated David Wang, Huawei’s Executive Director of the Board, highlighting the crucial role of telecom networks, particularly 5G, in AI development’s continued success.

Infrastructure and Cooling Technology

The development of AI’s infrastructure, including processing power and cooling technology, was a key theme at the conference. Sue Ryan, Vice President of Marketing at Frore Systems, discussed the challenges of integrating powerful processing capabilities into increasingly smaller devices.

Frore Systems’ solution, AirJet, is a cooling device in the form of ultra-thin chips, addressing the need for efficient heat management.

AI’s Leading Role in Connectivity

Lara Dewar from GSMA, the event’s organisers, noted that AI has moved from a background role to a leading position in the connectivity sector. This shift was evident with multiple AI-powered cars on display, reflecting the growing influence of the Internet of Things in the automotive industry.

“There is no doubt in my mind that AI will reshape our lives and businesses as we know them,” Dewar concluded, capturing the transformative spirit of the Mobile World Congress Shanghai.
