Former University of Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore was taken into custody Wednesday evening in Washtenaw County, hours after the university abruptly terminated his contract for violating internal policy.
Authorities in Saline first detained Moore before transferring him to Pittsfield Township police, who are investigating an alleged assault reported in the 3000 block of Ann Arbor–Saline Road around 4:10 p.m.
Officers said the case appears to be isolated and that no threat to the public exists.
In a brief statement, Pittsfield police confirmed that a suspect had been booked into the Washtenaw County Jail pending a review of potential charges by the county prosecutor.
Investigators declined to release additional details, citing the sensitive nature of the allegations and the ongoing inquiry.
Earlier in the day, Saline police acknowledged they had assisted in locating Moore at the request of Pittsfield Township authorities.
University Fires Moore for ‘Inappropriate Relationship’
The University of Michigan announced Moore’s dismissal shortly before news of his detention broke.
School officials said an internal investigation produced credible evidence that the 39-year-old coach engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, a breach of university conduct rules.
Moore served two seasons as the Wolverines’ head coach after previously working as offensive coordinator.
His departure marks a significant shake-up for the program, which had been preparing for the postseason.
Community and Campus Reaction
News of Moore’s firing and subsequent arrest quickly spread across campus, sparking widespread discussion among students and alumni.
Many expressed shock at how rapidly the situation escalated, while others emphasized the need for accountability within high-profile university positions.
Investigation Ongoing
Local authorities have not detailed the nature of the alleged assault or how it may relate to the internal findings that led to the coach’s dismissal. Prosecutors are expected to review the case in the coming days.
The University of Michigan has not commented further beyond its initial statement, and representatives for Moore have not responded to requests for comment.
