FG Commends Lafarge Africa’s Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Leading innovative and sustainable building solutions provider Lafarge Africa Plc has received praise for its dedication to environmental sustainability from the Honorable Minister of the Environment, Mr. Balarabe Abbas Lawal.

The Minister who gave this commendation during a courtesy visit of the company’s management team led by the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi to the Honourable Minister in Abuja recently highlighted Lafarge Africa’s accomplishments in environmental responsibility, citing their numerous awards over the years as evidence of the company’s environmental friendliness.

He further commended Lafarge Africa for its role as a key player in the cement industry, acknowledging its impact on the nation’s economic growth and development , while highlighting the environmental challenges associated with the cement industry. He emphasized the importance of compliance with environmental regulations.

Adopting energy-efficient technology and modern, cleaner production methods in line with international best practices was encouraged by the minister. In order to improve the company’s relationship with the host communities, the Minister also asked for increased Corporate Social Responsibility, which included building restrooms in those communities.

In response, Mr. Alade-Akinyemi expressed his sincere congratulations on the Honourable Minister’s recent appointment and his faith in the Minister’s ability to spearhead the Ministry’s goals. He emphasized the role Lafarge Africa has played in the construction and infrastructure development sectors of Nigeria over the course of its 60-year history, as well as the company’s commitment to environmentally sustainable operations.

Acknowledging the crucial role of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Alade-Akinyemi appreciated the unwavering support in facilitating the approval of pivotal projects aimed at enhancing Lafarge Africa’s environmental sustainability initiatives. Notably, he highlighted the swift approval process for Alternative Fuels for kiln firing at the Ewekoro and Mfamosing facilities and the Storage of ash permit for the Ashaka Captive Power Plant project.

According to Alade-Akinyemi “As a key stakeholder, Lafarge Africa Plc shares in the vision in ensuring manufacturing companies like ours operate responsibly, minimize their impact and contribute to the overall sustainability of the environment. “We are confident that under your leadership the ministry will continue to attain its objectives.”

He expressed Lafarge Africa’s desire to work with the Ministry more closely on climate change and sustainability initiatives, and he recognized that industry advancement of sustainable practices depends on group efforts.
