Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has initiated the distribution of free prepaid meters to its Band A customers as part of the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) scheme. This move aims to bridge the metering gap and enhance service delivery within its jurisdiction. Band A customers, who receive a minimum of 20 hours of electricity supply daily, are encouraged to apply for meter replacements, especially if their current meters are faulty or outdated. Applications can be submitted through EKEDC’s official website.

Understanding Nigeria’s Electricity Tariff Bands

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) introduced the Service-Based Tariff (SBT) system to align electricity tariffs with the quality of service provided. Under this system, consumers are categorized into Bands A to E based on daily supply hours:

  • Band A: Minimum of 20 hours per day
  • Band B: Minimum of 16 hours per day
  • Band C: Minimum of 12 hours per day
  • Band D: Minimum of 8 hours per day
  • Band E: Minimum of 4 hours per day

This classification ensures that customers are billed in accordance with the electricity supply they receive.

Benefits of Prepaid Meters for Consumers

Prepaid meters offer several advantages to electricity consumers:

  • Cost Control: Users can monitor and manage their electricity consumption, preventing unexpected high bills.
  • Transparency: Real-time tracking of energy usage promotes efficient consumption habits.
  • Elimination of Estimated Billing: Prepaid meters remove the need for estimated bills, reducing disputes over inaccurate readings.
  • Flexibility: Consumers can purchase electricity credits based on their budget and needs.

By adopting prepaid meters, consumers gain greater control over their electricity usage and expenses.

EKEDC’s Commitment to Service Excellence

EKEDC’s General Manager, Corporate Communications and Strategy, Mr. Babatunde Lasaki, emphasized the company’s dedication to improving customer experience through technological innovations and efficient service delivery. He stated, “We encourage all Band A customers with faulty or obsolete meters to visit our website and apply for a replacement at no cost.” Lasaki also commended the Federal Government for its continuous efforts to bridge the metering gap and improve the overall performance of the power sector.
