ECOWAS Declares Regional State of Emergency Amid Rising Coups, Security Threats

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced a regional state of emergency, citing escalating political instability and a surge of military takeovers across West Africa.

The declaration was delivered on Tuesday by Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, during the 55th ministerial meeting of the Mediation and Security Council held in Abuja.

The gathering brought together foreign affairs and defence ministers to assess the growing threats facing the sub-region.

Touray said the wave of coups, attempted mutinies, and democratic setbacks across member states has pushed the region into a “critical moment,” warning that West Africa must urgently confront the weakening of democratic institutions and worsening insecurity.

According to him, the developments are a call for “deep reflection on the direction of governance in our region and renewed investment in safeguarding the peace and stability of our community.”

The emergency declaration marks one of ECOWAS’ strongest responses yet to the political volatility sweeping the sub-region, following recent unconstitutional regime changes and armed uprisings.
