Dr. Doyin Okupe, a towering figure in Nigerian medicine and politics, has passed away at the age of 72, leaving behind a legacy of service and resilience.

Family sources confirmed his death on March 07, 2025, revealing that the distinguished physician and former presidential aide had been critically ill in the weeks prior.

Okupe, who would have turned 73 on March 22, succumbed after a prolonged struggle with cancer, a battle that defined much of his later years. His passing marks the end of an era for a man whose contributions spanned healthcare, governance, and social reform.

A Relentless Fight Against Cancer

Okupe’s health challenges began 16 years ago with a prostate cancer diagnosis, a condition he managed with characteristic determination. However, his ordeal intensified when he later developed sarcoma in his right shoulder.

In recent months, his condition worsened significantly, prompting hospitalization and a desperate trip to Israel for advanced medical treatment. Despite the efforts of his family and a dedicated care team, his health continued to decline, culminating in his death.

Loved ones and supporters had grown increasingly concerned as his frailty became evident, yet his resolve to fight remained unshaken until the end.

A Life Rooted in Medicine

Born on March 22, 1950, in Ogun State, Nigeria, Doyin Okupe’s journey began with a solid foundation in medicine. He graduated from the prestigious University of Ibadan with a degree in Medicine and Surgery, laying the groundwork for a successful career as a physician.

Okupe established a thriving medical practice and became a vocal advocate for improving Nigeria’s healthcare system. His expertise fueled his passion for health policy reform, earning him recognition as a champion for better medical practices and access to care across the nation.

A Political Luminary

Beyond the operating room, Okupe carved out an illustrious career in Nigerian politics. He served as a special assistant to multiple former presidents, bringing his sharp intellect and fervor to the corridors of power.

A prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he played a pivotal role in shaping political discourse and policy development of the party.

Known for his articulate and passionate style, Okupe tackled issues ranging from health and education to economic reform, consistently pushing for progressive change. His tenure in public office was defined by an unwavering commitment to the welfare of everyday Nigerians.

A Legacy of Impact and Inspiration

Dr. Doyin Okupe’s death reverberates as a profound loss to Nigeria, where his dual roles as a healer and a leader touched countless lives. His contributions to medicine improved healthcare standards, while his political endeavors sought to uplift the nation’s governance.

Even as illness ravaged his body, Okupe’s spirit remained a beacon of dedication and hope. As tributes pour in, his legacy endures, a testament to a life spent in service to others, advocating for a better Nigeria until his final breath.
