Disney, Warner Bros, Fox Abandon Sports Streaming Service Idea Following Legal Challenges

Disney, Warner Bros, and Fox have abandoned their proposed Venu Sports Streaming Service Idea Following the legal challenges they encountered in the process of starting the streaming service.

The ambitious streaming service,  which would have bundled some of the most popular sports channels into a single—and somewhat pricey—package, has faced opposition from different quarters since the idea was announced.

In a joint statement, the three media giants stated “After careful consideration, we have collectively agreed to discontinue the Venu Sports joint venture and not launch the streaming service.

“In an ever-changing marketplace, we determined that it was best to meet the evolving demands of sports fans by focusing on existing products and distribution channels. We are proud of the work done on Venu to date and grateful to the Venu staff, whom we will support through this transition period.”

Initial Announcement of Venture

In February 2024, Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery announced plans to create Venu Sports, aiming to offer a comprehensive sports streaming service targeting cord-cutters and cord-nevers. The service was scheduled to launch by the fall of 2024.

Legal Challenges

However, in August 2024, FuboTV a competing sports streaming service filed an antitrust lawsuit against the media giants, alleging that Venu Sports would substantially lessen competition in the streaming market. A federal judge granted a preliminary injunction, temporarily blocking the launch of Venu Sports.

To suppress this, Disney merged its Hulu + Live TV service with FuboTV, acquiring a controlling interest in the combined entity, and as a result, FuboTV dropped its opposition to Venu Sports.

There proved to be even more opposition as competitors like DirecTV and EchoStar raised antitrust concerns and legal challenges against Venu Sports, prolonging the legal battles.

Eventual Cancellation of Venture

Following ongoing legal hurdles and a dynamic marketplace, Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery collectively decided to discontinue the Venu Sports joint venture and not proceed with the streaming service. They instead chose to focus on their existing products and distribution channels to meet the evolving demands of sports fans.
