The Lagos State Government experienced a significant economic surge during the 2024 holiday season, generating a substantial $71.6 million in revenue.
The revenue stream was notably bolstered by the hospitality sector, with hotels contributing $44 million and short-let apartments contributing $13 million, further reinforcing Lagos’ established reputation as a leading hub for tourism and entertainment within the African continent.
The report, titled “Lagos State Detty December 2024/2025,” was reviewed under the chairmanship of Mr. Idris Aregbe, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, during which these figures were presented.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Lagos Press Office emphasized the significant role of the festive season in driving economic growth, highlighting the key findings of the report.
“Lagos State once again proved why it is the tourism and entertainment capital of Africa with an extraordinary December 2024 season as it generated over $71.6 million in revenue across tourism, hospitality, and entertainment sectors.
“During the season tagged ‘Detty December’, hotels alone accounted for over $44 million, while short-let apartments contributed over $13 million, underscoring Lagos’ immense economic potential as a destination city,” the statement noted.
The “Detty December” season witnessed a vibrant calendar of events, captivating large crowds of locals, international tourists, and members of the Nigerian diaspora. High-profile events such as the Greater Lagos Fiesta, Mrs. Universe Africa, Rhythm Unplugged, African Fashion Week, and the Spotify Wrapped Concert fueled this festive excitement, attracting attendees eager to immerse themselves in the distinctive energy of Lagos.
Tourism during the season not only boosted the economy but also provided a valuable platform to celebrate and showcase Nigerian arts, culture, and music on a global scale.
Mr. Aregbe attributed the season’s success to the visionary leadership of the Lagos State Government. He highlighted the government’s consistent dedication to fostering growth within the tourism and entertainment sectors, which ultimately paved the way for the extraordinary success of Detty December.
Mr. Aregbe emphasized that tourism is vital for both economic prosperity and the preservation of Lagos’ rich cultural heritage, with the December “Ember” season serving as a crucial catalyst for this progress.
He commended the ingenuity and resilience of Lagosians, from local artisans to hospitality and entertainment entrepreneurs, whose contributions were instrumental to the season’s success.
The statement further indicated that the valuable insights gleaned from Detty December will be instrumental in shaping the 2025 “Lagos Tourism is Rising” campaign.
Building upon the state’s cultural and economic strengths, this initiative seeks to expand tourism offerings, generate more opportunities for residents, and further establish Lagos as a global leader in tourism and economic excellence.
