Andela Recruits in Latin & South America to Service Global Client Base

Andela, founded in May 2014, is scaling up recruitment of engineers in Latin and South America and Eastern Europe. It is thus completing its transition from a company that connects engineering talents from Africa into a global talent factory that helps firms across the world build remote engineering teams.  The company which describes itself as “the world best engineering talent network”, has built a reputation with global corporations for supplying flexible but reliable engineering staff. It now recruits engineers from 37 countries.

Andela has placed over 1,000 engineers, as individuals as well as teams, in over 200 companies.

Jeremy Johnson, the CEO at Andela, said in a recent company statement, “Andela’s mission is to connect brilliance with opportunity. This expansion has always been part of our long-term roadmap, and we’re excited that the world is ready for it. When we began inviting developers from across Africa to apply last year, we more than doubled the number of countries represented. We’re already seeing the same effects in new regions, and we’re excited to welcome new talent into our growing community.

“The future of work is now, and this expansion continues our march towards bringing us all closer together.”

A Post Coronavirus Bounce

In the wake of the new coronavirus pandemic last year (2020), Andela disengaged 135 engineers as companies all over the world scaled down operations. Johnson then explained the decision to lay-off staff, “Like any venture-backed startup, we’re built for growth. And so if growth is gonna slow dramatically, your [cost] burden has to come down..” But Andela has a firm grounds to rebuild  on as “The vast majority of our customers have stayed with us”.

In the last six months, application from qualified engineers has risen by 750%. Andela now has engineers from five continents which the company says will enable it deploy talents in every region, thus able  to work with clients all over the world with an understanding of local nuances. A McKinsey report found that diversity is a major factor in explaining the performance of executive teams that deliver innovation and growth for businesses. Andela declared in the statement that “the future of remote work is global, and Andela provides the vital link to talent wherever it is found”.

Martin Chikilian, the Head of Talent Operations at Andela commented about expanding the company’s global pool of engineers and developers, “We’ve seen exponential growth and interest from engineers from across Africa, who want to work with some of the world’s most exciting technology-focused companies…. Our globalization will further increase our footprint, creating more opportunities for Andela to showcase the visibility into the capabilities of engineers from the continent.”

Last month, more than 30% of Andela inbound engineer applications came from outside of Africa (half came from Latin America), creating a significant increase in time-zone coverage for Andela clients.

Andela’s clients include global tech giants like GitHub, Cloudflare, and ViacomCBS.
