Match Report

Chelsea are showing they mean business this season as they produced yet another solid performance. The Blues thought they had made an early breakthrough into the match when Cole Palmer scored past Nick Pope. Unfortunately, the strike was ruled offside after a VAR check of the tightest margins.

The home crowd’s disappointment didn’t last long as Chelsea soon made another breakthrough when Palmer worked his magic to give Pedro Neto a chance to attack via the left flank. Neto evaded Schar’s tackle before squaring to Jackson who was clinical with his finish. Chelsea led 1-0.

The visitors mounted a comeback on the half-hour mark as a good team build-up led to Alexander Isak scoring from Lewis Hall’s assist from the left. It was the first time Newcastle scored in the past three league games as they went into the break level on points.

The absence of injured Anthony Gordon was felt as Chelsea controlled the centre for most of the match. The hosts scored the decisive second goal that secured them the win only 75 seconds into the second half of the game.

Newcastle lost possession at the halfway point allowing Romeo Lavia to pass the ball to the perfectly positioned Palmer. Palmer made no mistake as he sprinted forward to score his 17th Premier League goal of 2024 in Stamford Bridge. The ending of the game saw some frantic open play from both sides as they looked to score more goals. Isak had a couple of opportunities to score but failed while Chelsea had an injury-time penalty overturned by the VAR.

The match ended with Chelsea winning 2-1.

The result saw Enzo Maresca’s team move up to fifth place in the PL table and look to challenge for a top 4 finish. In contrast, Eddie Howe and Newcastle have slumped to 12th place and have gone five league matches without a win.
