BREAKING: Kamala Harris picks Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as running mate

Kamala Harris has chosen Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota, as her running mate, positioning him as the ideal partner to complement her in a significant and challenging bid for the White House.

Walz emerged from a shortlist of Democratic figures considered to broaden Harris’s appeal as she races against Donald Trump.

Complementing Harris’s Candidacy

As she aims to become the first woman president, Harris, already a trailblazer as the first female and first Black and South Asian vice president, has limited time before Election Day on November 5.

The announcement, first reported by CNN, fulfills expectations that Harris would select a white man to balance the ticket and counter Republican attacks suggesting she is too far to the left, according to AFP.

Who is Tim Walz?

Tim Walz, a 60-year-old Midwesterner, offers a folksy demeanour and a political background far removed from the coastal elites of California, where Harris is from. Walz’s advocacy for popular Democratic policies, such as cannabis legalisation and increased worker protections, also appeals to progressives.

Immediate Campaign Launch

The Harris-Walz duo will embark on an intense, five-day tour through key battleground states, starting with Pennsylvania. Fresh from securing the Democratic nomination, Harris heads to the national convention in Chicago with firm control of her party.

Harris’s Remarkable Journey

Harris entered the presidential race last month after President Joe Biden withdrew, citing concerns over his mental acuity at 81. Despite the campaign being just two weeks old, Harris has shattered fundraising records, drawn large crowds, and dominated social media, swiftly erasing Trump’s polling lead over Biden.

Current Polling Landscape

According to the latest University of Massachusetts Amherst poll, Harris leads Trump nationally by three points—46 per cent to 43 per cent—compared to Biden’s four-point deficit to Trump in January. In critical swing states, Harris is neck and neck with Trump, who won in 2016 but was defeated by Biden in 2020.

First Major Test: Vice Presidential Selection

Selecting a running mate is seen as Harris’s first significant test in her presidential bid. Amy Walter, a polling expert from Cook Political Report, commented on CBS News about the insight this choice provides into Harris’s thought process.

Campaign Trail Challenges

Harris and Walz’s first test of their campaign strategy involves a nationwide tour from Philadelphia to Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, and Nevada. However, Tropical Storm Debby has postponed a stop in Georgia and possibly North Carolina.

The “Blue Wall” Strategy

Pennsylvania, part of the “blue wall” that secured Biden’s victory in 2020 alongside Michigan and Wisconsin, was a key factor in Harris’s decision, AFP reports.

Many expected her to choose Pennsylvania’s governor, Josh Shapiro, but Walz was ultimately selected. Other contenders included former astronaut and current senator Mark Kelly of Arizona and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.

Trump’s Campaign Tactics

Trump, who was politically buoyant after surviving an assassination attempt and showcasing his vigour at the Republican convention, is now adjusting to Harris’s swift campaign progress.

At a recent rally in Georgia, Trump labelled Harris a “Marxist” and “radical left freak,” predicting an “economic crash” under her leadership. He also controversially accused Harris of “turning Black” for political gain.

Harris’s Campaign Strategy

Harris’s campaign has adopted a sharper, meme-friendly approach, branding Trump and his vice-presidential pick J.D. Vance as “weird.”

Recently, the Harris campaign claimed Trump was “scared” to debate her after he declined a scheduled debate on ABC, expressing readiness to debate her on Fox News instead.
