Australia Student Visa 2025: New Fees, Work Limits, and Rules Unveiled

Australia’s Subclass 500 Student Visa remains a gateway to world-class education in 2025. With vibrant cities and top-tier universities, it attracts thousands of international students annually.

The visa allows enrollment in university degrees, Vocational Education and Training (VET), pathway programs, or English Language Intensive Courses (ELICOS). It permits stays up to five years, with flexible travel and the option to include dependents.

To apply, secure a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from an approved institution. Gather documents proving financial capacity, English proficiency, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

The application process is streamlined online, requiring all documents to be submitted accurately. Errors can delay approval, so precision is critical given rising costs.

As of July 1, 2025, the base visa fee surged 25% to AUD 2,000, up from AUD 1,600. This makes Australia’s student visa the world’s most expensive, surpassing previous hikes from AUD 710 in 2024.

Additional fees include AUD 1,225 for applicants over 18, AUD 400 for those under 18, and AUD 700 for the Subsequent Temporary Application Charge (STAC) if applying domestically. These costs underscore the need for a flawless application.

Work rights are a key benefit, allowing 48 hours per fortnight during study periods. Unlimited hours are permitted during official breaks, like summer holidays.

Research students in master’s or doctoral programs enjoy unrestricted work hours once their course begins. However, no work is allowed before the course starts.

Violating visa conditions, such as exceeding work limits or failing to maintain enrollment, risks visa cancellation. Students must also uphold satisfactory academic progress and OSHC coverage.

Dependents, including partners and children, can join visa holders. Partners of master’s or PhD students may work full-time, tied to the study program level.

Post-study, the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) offers work opportunities. On the Subclass 500, students must adhere to the 48-hour fortnightly limit during term time.

These rules ensure compliance while balancing study and work. Staying informed of immigration updates is vital for visa holders.

Australia’s appeal as an education hub remains strong despite higher costs. Its diverse culture and academic excellence continue to draw global talent.

The 2025 fee increase reflects Australia’s premium education market. Budgeting for the AUD 2,000 fee and additional costs is now essential.

Prospective students must weigh these expenses against the benefits of studying in Australia. Thorough preparation can maximize visa approval chances.

With strict work and enrollment rules, compliance is non-negotiable. Breaching conditions can jeopardize your stay and future opportunities.

The Subclass 500 visa opens doors to transformative education and experiences. Understanding its requirements is key to success.

Plan carefully to navigate the financial and regulatory landscape. Australia’s opportunities await those who prepare diligently.
