Over the years, Welby served in several parishes, including as a canon residentiary at Coventry Cathedral and, later, as the Dean of Liverpool from 2007 to 2011. In 2011, he was appointed Bishop of Durham before ascending to the archbishopric in 2012.

In 1983, he and his wife, Caroline Eaton, suffered the tragic loss of their seven-month-old daughter, Johanna, in a car accident. This profound grief led Welby to establish a special day for bereaved parents at Coventry Cathedral, where an annual service now commemorates the lives of children who have died. The couple has six children and has long been active in various charitable causes.
