The North East caucus meeting of All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders descended into chaos on Sunday after National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, and Comrade Mustapha Salihu, National Vice Chairman of the North-East, failed to mention the name of Vice-President Kashim Shettima while endorsing President Bola Tinubu for a second term.

The meeting, held in Gombe State, was attended by almost all the ministers, lawmakers, and governors of the party from the region key personalities from the National secretariat of the party, led by Abdullahi Ganduje.

During the event, the Vice Chairman North East, Salihu to is said to have endorsed President Tinubu to emerge as an unopposed candidate of the APC in 2027 without any mention of Shettima, who hails from Borno in the North East.

The moment he finished his speech, delegates at the event are said to have started hurling insults at him, with some threatening to attack him physically. National Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Ganduje, also endorsed Tinubu alone, without mentioning Shettima. This brought the meeting to an abrupt end, with both leaders having to be escorted out of the meeting by security operatives.

The Deputy National Chairman of the party, Bukar Dalori, is however said to have endorsed both Tinubu and Shettima for a second term to quell tensions.

The tensions witnessed at the event is not surprising as North‑Central groups (like the Renaissance Movement) have urged Tinubu to pick a running mate from their zone, or consider dropping Shettima to ensure regional balance while the Arewa Youth Movement has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to dump Vice President Kashim Shettima for a Northern Christian as his running mate in the 2027 presidential election. All these scheming has caused unease in the ruling party as the 2027 elections draw close.
