Andrés Iniesta, one of football’s all-time greats, is set to retire from professional football at the age of 40.

The announcement will be made on October 8, a date symbolically tied to his legendary number 8 jersey, which he wore throughout his career at Barcelona.

This marks the end of a remarkable 22-year journey that has spanned multiple continents and leagues.

Professional Career

Iniesta’s career is best remembered for his iconic years at Barcelona, where he formed an unstoppable midfield partnership with Xavi Hernandez.

Together, they dominated European football, with Iniesta playing a crucial role in winning nine La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies. His finesse, vision, and technical prowess made him one of the most revered midfielders of his generation.

Beyond his club success, Iniesta left an indelible mark on the international stage with Spain.

He was instrumental in Spain’s golden era, helping the national team secure two European Championships and a historic World Cup victory in 2010, where he scored the winning goal in the final against the Netherlands, grounding his place in football folklore.

After leaving Barcelona in 2018, Iniesta continued his career in Japan with Vissel Kobe, where he added further silverware to his collection, including an Emperor’s Cup and a Japanese Super Cup.

His final professional stint was in the UAE with Emirates Club, before deciding to hang up his boots in 2024.

Iniesta’s legacy goes far beyond the numbers, as his style of play and humble demeanor have earned him admiration worldwide.

He will forever be remembered as a symbol of elegance in the game, and his retirement on October 8 will be a fitting tribute to a career that spanned over two decades and left a mark on football.
