Aminu Dantata, a revered Nigerian billionaire and elder statesman, passed away at 94 in the early hours of Saturday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. His death was confirmed by his grandchildren, Sanusi and Nanah, on their social media platforms.

Born in Kano in 1931, Dantata was the last surviving child of the legendary Alhassan Dantata, whose legacy he expanded through a remarkable career in business and public service. As the uncle of Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, Dantata’s influence extended across Nigeria’s economic and social landscape.

Dantata’s business empire spanned agriculture, real estate, construction, and manufacturing, with his leadership as Chairman and Managing Director of Alhassan Dantata and Sons Limited. His entrepreneurial journey began at 18 as a produce buyer, laying the foundation for a conglomerate that became a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economy.

A committed philanthropist, Dantata donated N1.5 billion in September 2024 to support flood victims in Borno State, reflecting his lifelong dedication to social good. His contributions earned him widespread respect and numerous honorary degrees from prestigious universities.

Dantata’s public service was equally distinguished, serving as a member of the Northern House of Assembly in 1966 and as a Kano State Commissioner from 1967 to 1973.
