Alice Independent School District (ISD) is advising parents and guardians to be aware of potential disruptions to student travel for extracurricular activities amid the ongoing enforcement of stricter immigration policies introduced during the Trump administration. The district recently informed families that U.S. Border Patrol agents have been boarding school buses at highway checkpoints in the Valley to question students about their citizenship status. These heightened immigration enforcement measures are part of a broader effort to crack down on undocumented immigration, which has led to increased scrutiny of individuals traveling across state lines.
With extracurricular activities like sports, band, and other co-curricular events playing a key role in student development, Alice ISD is stressing the importance of ensuring that all students are properly documented. Families are being urged to be vigilant, as students found without the required documentation may face severe consequences, including being detained, removed from buses, or even deported under current immigration policies. Furthermore, if students provide false information regarding their citizenship status, they could face permanent bans from future U.S. citizenship.
The school district has also been proactive in addressing the situation. Alice ISD is reviewing its student travel waivers and considering additional measures to mitigate the impact of these immigration crackdowns, such as the use of designated chaperone vehicles that can stay with students should they face issues during travel. The district remains committed to ensuring that students continue to have opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities, despite the potential challenges arising from the broader immigration crackdown.
Dr. Anysia Trevino, the district’s superintendent, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “We understand how concerning these changes may be for families, and we are fully committed to supporting our students through these difficult times. Our priority is the safety and well-being of our students, and we want to ensure that they can continue to engage in extracurricular activities without unnecessary fear of being detained or separated from their peers.”
Alice ISD encourages all families to carefully review their children’s travel documentation and ensure they are prepared for potential interactions with Border Patrol agents during upcoming school trips. The district’s guidance aims to prevent any unnecessary disruptions to students’ participation in these important activities and to help families navigate the evolving immigration enforcement landscape.
