Lucky Aiyedatiwa was inaugurated as the Governor of Ondo State on Monday, marking the start of his first full four-year term. The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure, the state capital, comes two months after Aiyedatiwa secured victory in the governorship election under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner. His ascension follows the death of his predecessor, Rotimi Akeredolu, who passed away in December 2023, thrusting Aiyedatiwa into the state’s top office.
Aiyedatiwa’s journey to the governorship began in 2020 when he was elected Deputy Governor alongside Akeredolu. Following Akeredolu’s prolonged illness and eventual demise on December 27, 2023, Aiyedatiwa assumed the role of acting governor before being formally confirmed through the recent election. The 59-year-old leader now steps into a position of immense responsibility, steering Ondo State, a region with significant oil-producing communities through a period of economic and political recalibration.
Born on January 12, 1965, in Obe-Nla, a coastal community in Ilaje Local Government Area, Aiyedatiwa brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His educational journey started at Saint Peter’s Primary School in Obe-Nla, followed by secondary education at Ikosi High School in Ketu, Lagos, where he graduated in 1982. He later earned a Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) in Economics and Government from Lagos State College of Education (now Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education) in 1986, laying a foundation in economic principles that would shape his career.
Aiyedatiwa’s academic pursuits didn’t end there. In 2001, he obtained an Advanced Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Ibadan, followed by a Postgraduate Certificate in Chief Executive Education from Lagos Business School in 2009. His educational crescendo came in 2013 with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Liverpool, equipping him with global insights into management and governance.
Before entering the political arena, Aiyedatiwa built a multifaceted career spanning several industries. His professional life included stints in education, pharmaceuticals, finance, and general merchandise, reflecting a versatility that would later define his entrepreneurial ventures. In 1996, he founded the Blue Wall Group of Companies, a conglomerate with interests in trading, foreign exchange, and travel logistics. This business acumen underscores his approach to economic development, a critical focus for Ondo State given its oil-rich economy and diverse commercial landscape.
Aiyedatiwa’s political career kicked off in 2011 with the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), a party that later merged into the APC, now a dominant force in Nigerian politics. His first major political role came between 2018 and 2019 when he served as the Federal Commissioner representing Ondo State on the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). This position allowed him to engage with regional economic challenges, particularly in the oil-producing Niger Delta, an experience that likely informed his gubernatorial campaign promises.
His election as Deputy Governor in 2020 alongside Akeredolu marked a significant milestone, positioning him as a key figure in the state’s administration. Akeredolu’s death in late 2023, after a battle with prostate cancer, catapulted Aiyedatiwa into the spotlight, first as an interim leader and now as the elected governor.
The late Rotimi Akeredolu, who died at 67 on December 27, 2023, left behind a complex legacy after a prolonged struggle with prostate cancer. His tenure as governor was marked by efforts to address security and economic issues in Ondo State, though his illness in his final years shifted some responsibilities to Aiyedatiwa. Now, as governor, Aiyedatiwa inherits both the challenges and opportunities of a state rich in resources yet grappling with infrastructure and development needs.
As an oil-producing state, Ondo’s economy hinges on effective resource management, a task Aiyedatiwa’s background in economics and business may well suit. His private-sector experience with Blue Wall Group and his academic credentials suggest a pragmatic approach to governance, potentially prioritizing trade, investment, and job creation. With the global oil market in flux and Nigeria’s economic diversification efforts ongoing, Aiyedatiwa’s policies could shape Ondo’s role in the national economy over the next four years.
The swearing-in ceremony in Akure not only marks a personal triumph for Aiyedatiwa but also signals a new chapter for Ondo State. As he takes the reins, all eyes will be on how his diverse expertise translates into actionable economic strategies for one of Nigeria’s key southwestern states.
