African Literary Icon Ngui wa Thiong’o Passes on at 87

African literary icon Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, has passed on at the age of 87. Ngugi wa Thiong’o who was one of the pioneers of modern African literature passed on Wednesday morning.

His death was announced by his son Wanjiku wa Ngugi on Facebook

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dad, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o this Wednesday morning, 28th May 2025. He lived a full life, fought a good fight. As was his last wish, let’s celebrate his life and his work. Rîa ratha na rîa thŭa. Tŭrî aira!

“The family’s spokesperson Nducu Wa Ngugi will announce details of his celebration of life soon.

Njoki Wa Ngugi Ngina Kiarie Tee Ngugi Kay Ngugi Björn”. He posted.

Thiong’o whose work primarily documented the transformation of his country – Kenya – from a colonial subject to a democracy was engaged in the literary world for over six decades. He was a fierce proponent of literature written in native African languages.

His works include the popular “Decolonizing the mind” and “The trial of Dedan Kimathi”
