AFCON 2025: Past Dominance, Present Stakes Collide as Nigeria Faces Mozambique in AFCON Round 16 Clash

Nigeria and Mozambique face off at the Africa Cup of Nations with history firmly on the side of the Super Eagles, but the stakes of the current tournament give the fixture renewed significance.

Nigeria have historically dominated Mozambique with the Super Eagles remaining unbeaten in five previous meetings with Mozambique, recording four wins and one draw, and scoring the bulk of the goals across those encounters. Their only previous AFCON meeting also ended in a clear Nigerian victory.

At the ongoing AFCON, Nigeria arrive in the knockout stage in strong form. They won all three group matches, scoring eight goals. However, they have also conceded in every game, a reminder that defensive concentration remains a work in progress.

Mozambique, meanwhile, are enjoying a historic campaign. The Mambas reached the knockout stage for the first time, advancing as one of the best third-placed teams. They have scored four goals in the tournament and claimed a landmark group-stage victory that secured their progression.

The stage is therefore set for either a routine win for Nigeria or a major tournament upset.
