Adefunke Adeyemi begins 2nd Term as Secretary General of African Civil Aviation Commission

Adefunke Adeyemi has commenced her second tenure as Secretary General of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) after being reelected in November 2024.

Her second tenure is expected to run from 1st September 2025 to 31st August 2028, having been elected for the first time on 1st September 2022.

Speaking on her reelection, she said, “It is an honour to continue serving Africa and its people through aviation and AFCAC.

“As we advance the full implementation of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), strengthen aviation safety, security, air transport, and champion environmental sustainability, resilience, and inclusion, I remain deeply committed to contributing towards a unified African aviation.”

Prior to her AFCAC role, Ms. Adeyemi had an esteemed career at the International Air Transport Association (IATA), where she served as Regional Director of External Affairs & Sustainability for Africa.

She is a leading advocate for the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) and a Private Sector Champion of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Her aviation career began as a lawyer in Nigeria, later serving as Company Secretary and General Counsel for Virgin Nigeria Airways before transitioning to various roles at IATA.

The African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), since its establishment as the African Union Specialized Agency on all civil aviation matters and as the Executing Agency of the Yamoussoukro Decision (YD), continues to take a leadership role in coordinating with its member states, African organizations, and industry stakeholders to champion continental initiatives for the development of civil aviation in Africa.
