A 94-year-old Adedapo Idowu has registered for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), showcasing that age is no barrier to the pursuit of education.
Mr. Idowu’s story was highlighted in the recent bulletin from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). He expressed immense excitement about finally having the opportunity to pursue his long-held dream of tertiary education. “I can now attain my dream at an advanced age,” he stated, reflecting on his journey.
The registration for the UTME was described by Idowu as smooth and efficient. He praised JAMB for integrating the National Identity Number into the registration process, which he believes has significantly reduced discrimination against the elderly, underprivileged, and individuals with disabilities. “The registration staff gave me a sense of belonging through the warm reception at the registration venue,” he noted, emphasizing the inclusive environment fostered by JAMB.
Idowu encouraged JAMB to continue its efforts in maintaining a seamless registration system. He expressed confidence in his ability to take and pass the examination. Furthermore, he advised fellow candidates to approach their academic journey with professionalism and contentment, setting a positive example for others.
The 2025 UTME registration began on January 31, and according to JAMB, the number of registered candidates has already surpassed 700,000. Among these, there are notably 11,000 underage applicants, adding another layer to the diversity of participants in this year’s examination cycle.
Adedapo Idowu’s story not only highlights the inclusivity of the current educational system but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for individuals at any age to pursue their educational aspirations.
