A 63-year-old French climber, Margareta Morin, has died while attempting to scale the world’s third highest mountain, Kanchenjunga, according to the expedition’s organiser.
she is said to have died above Camp 4 of the 8,586m tall Himalayan mountain on May 11.
“She died due to health complications while ascending.
“We are not yet able to bring back the body due to bad weather conditions.” Mr Yogendra Tamang of Peak 15 Adventure told AFP
Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain after Mount Everest and K2, it is regarded as one of the most technically demanding among the world’s 8,000m peaks.
It was the third death in the spring climbing season, which runs from April to early June after an American climber died last week while attempting Mount Makalu, the fifth highest mountain in the world. An Austrian climber also died while descending Nepal’s 6,812m Ama Dablam last month.
American Adrian Hayes during the same expedition fell sick with serious acute mountain sickness symptoms on the upper sections of Kangchenjunga while descending from the summit. Climbers brought him to Camp 4.
“Once the weather allows, we will evacuate him from the lower camps,” Chhang Dawa of Seven Summit Treks told The Himalayan Times.
Nepal is home to eight of the world’s 10 highest peaks and welcomes hundreds of climbers every year during the spring and autumn climbing seasons. It has already issued over 1,000 permits for its mountains this season, including 75 for Kanchenjunga. AFP
