Joseph Majesty Ojochegbe, a 14-year-old student from Government Day Secondary School, Karu has emerged winner of the second season of the “I Beg to Differ” debate competition organized by Nigerian Info FM Abuja walking away with the grand prize of N1 million.
Ojochebe thriumphed in a pulsating final against Helen Abu Francis where both students debated on the topic, “Nigeria is the Giant of Africa,” and a new segment called, “The Nigerian Dream.”
The debate sparked lively discussions across Nigeria Info’s social media platforms, proving just how passionate listeners were about the issues.
Speaking on his win, a visibly excited Joseph noted the experience was “thrilling and adventurous.” stating that despite initial doubts, he gained confidence throughout the competition. He also revealed his desire to get a PS5 game console with his prize money.
Chief Judge of the competition, Majeed Dahiru praised the high standard of the competition, highlighting the students’ confidence, knowledge, and composure. The judge also noted the strong performance of FCT public school students was a testament to the quality of public education in the region. He also encouraged schools to revive their debating clubs, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young public speakers.
Joseph, along with finalists Helen Abu Francis, Ruth Chikwere (third place), and Favour Anthony (fourth place), will now represent Abuja at the national competition in Lagos later this year.
The “I Beg to Differ” debate competition organized by Nigerian Info FM has gained nationwide attention due to its rigorous debate structure, engaging topics, and competitive nature and the Majeed Dahiru predicts the competition will continue to grow, becoming a highly sought-after event for schools across the country.
