KPMG Re-Elects Bill Thomas as CEO 1 Year before End of Term

The Global Board of the multinational professional services firm, KMPG International, has unanimously decided to extend the tenure of the company’s current Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, William “Bill” B. Thomas.

This decision comes a year ahead of schedule, as his current term does not expire until September 2021. Thomas was first elected Global Chairman for a four-year term in March 2017. He assumed the role on October 1, 2017, succeeding John B. Veihmeyer.

Since becoming Global Chairman, he has achieved growth and stability within the company, overseeing the actualization of the global strategy. He has inched KPMG closer towards its primary goal becoming the most trustworthy firm in its field. During his tenure, KPMG launched the $5 billion digital strategy investment plan, acquiring new alliances while strengthening the existing ones. The company grew its staff strength by 30,000 and emphasized its inclusion and diversity initiative across all levels.

Reacting to the news that he has been re-elected, Thomas said:

“I am deeply honored that KPMG’s Global Board, confirmed by the Global Council, have asked me to continue to serve as Global Chairman & CEO. In this critical moment, as our firms, clients and societies are facing some of the most challenging circumstances in a generation, it is imperative that KPMG continues to drive forward with our strategy. We must work together with all of our stakeholders as we chart a path towards recovery and growth.

“As we have done since I took on this role, we will focus on building trust. It has never been more important that stakeholders and societies can trust business. KPMG has a role to play in not just providing that assurance for others but also being a trusted business ourselves. Over the coming years, my focus will be on continuing to enable and empower these talented teams to achieve their full potential.”

A graduate of Chemistry turned accounting expert, Thomas has had the quite the illustrious career. With over thirty years’ experience in the company, Thomas has a strong record of stellar leadership in KPMG. He had served as Chairman of KPMG’s Americas region since 2014. Before then, he was CEO and Senior Partner of KPMG Canada from 2009 and 2016. His administrative achievements won him the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 and the Catalyst Canada Honors in 2015.

He is now expected to hold the position of Global Chairman and CEO until September 2025.
